About NGS

The National Grid Service (NGS) aims to enable coherent electronic access for UK researchers to all computational and data based resources and facilities required to carry out their research, independent of resource or researcher location.

What do arts and humanities researchers want from e-Infrastructure services? What services and resources make up the e-Infrastructure for the arts and humanities? How are these services accessed and used by researchers across the disciplines? How are they transforming the research practice, and enabling new forms of scholarship? What are the barriers to using these services in the arts and humanities, and how might these be addressed?

Recent work has provided WMS support in the NGS Portal.  This surgery will present details about this new functionality supported in the NGS Portal.

The NGS has recently had enquiries from several funding councils regarding their researchers use of the NGS.  Looking through our user accounts it would seem that many people have not completed the sections asking for funding details (i.e which research council funds your research, PhD, postdoc etc) and the name of the PI.

We are pleased to announce that Neil Geddes, Director of the NGS, will be presenting at the forthcoming NGS Innovation Forum on the 23rd - 24th November 2010.  Neil will focus on the future of the NGS over the next 2 - 3 years and the longer term opportunities that are available to the NGS.

The event will feature presentations from NGS users demonstrating how they have used the NGS in their research, breakout sessions to gather information from the delegates, updates from the European Grid community and ESFRI projects and much more.

A new feature this year will be walk-throughs of NGS tools using real life research examples.  It is our aim that delegates leave the event with new knowledge of these tools and of course NGS staff will be on hand to advise how to use these tools in your research.
