Edinburgh ECDF

Introduction

The University of Edinburgh Affiliate resource provides access to the Edinburgh Compute and Data Facility (ECDF). In accordance with the Affiliate status only users from the University are allowed access. It is hoped that this will change in the near future.

System Configuration

The ECDF has 246 IBM x3550 servers, 128 of which contain two dual-core Intel Woodcrest Xeon 5160 3.0 GHz CPUs, 8 GB of RAM, a 250 GB hard disk and two gigabit network cards. 58 of these servers are equipped with Infiniband fast interconnect. The remaining 118 servers contain two quad-core Intel Harpertown Xeon X5450 3.0 GHz CPUs, 16 GB of RAM, a 250GB hard disk and two gigabit network cards.

The storage is provided by an IBM DS4700 and two Sun 6540 systems with QLogic SAN switching, giving some 275 TB of storage. These disk systems use large SATA disks. The worker nodes access the storage via IBM's General Parallel File System (GPFS), for which eight IBM X3650 servers are deployed. Users' home and work directories are part of the GPFS and, as such, are shared across all login and compute nodes.

The operating system is Scientific Linux 4.5 64-bit.

Job duration should be explicitly specified, up to a maximum of 48 hours, if not, the maximum runtime will be 30 minutes. Parallel jobs are supported with up to 128 processors.
